When choosing an air conditioner, first consider the square footage of the area you wish to cool.
  • For square and rectangular areas, multiply room length by width.
  • For a triangular area, multiply room length by width and divide by 2.

    Consider these adjustments for the following circumstances:
  • If the room is heavily shaded, reduce BTUs by 10%.
  • If the room is very sunny, increase BTUs by 10 %.
  • If more than two people regularly occupy the room, add 600 BTUs for each person.
  • If the air conditioner is used in a kitchen, increase by 4,000 BTUs.
